Sermon By: Dr. O.Yomi-Sholoye JP
Bible Text: Luke 13 vs 5
“I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”
What do you understand by LAST CHANCE?
Last chance is a difficult situation in which there is one final chance to put things right.
Last Chance is a final opportunity to achieve or acquire something.
As our bible Text in Luke 13 vs 5 says
“I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”
You have to repent from your sins in order to be saved, if not your end journey will be in hell.
We Christians nowadays are very busy with all our schedules forgetting that the world is going to end soon with numerous signs and incidents happening across the globe.
Everyone is busy and has so much to do. There is a living to make, a house to clean, meals to prepare, an automobile to maintain, children’s activities to attend, and on and on the list goes.
Likewise, as it was also in the days of Lot; they are, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built, but on the day that lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Luke 17 vs 28-30
The people were too busy to think of the eternal realities and did not know that they were speeding towards their last chance to be saved.
Have we also forgotten about the kingdom of heaven, and we are busy with our daily lifestyle to remember to get prepared for the coming of Christ?
Many don’t even have time to pray nor to go to church, many don’t think that death might come to their door at any moment or that rapture could take place. Some of the so-called Christians have forgotten that Jesus Christ is coming soon.
This might be the last chance for you to repent and come back to Christ.
You as a Christian can think that because you don’t steal, you don’t commit murder, or any other criminal act so you don’t have to worry about the coming Christ, what about your service to God?
How can you rate your service before the Lord God?
Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”
Have you been offering a reasonable service to God or Has your service before the Lord been reasonable?
Brethren, take heed of the word of God from my mouth, take some time out to think “where are mine” in the presence of God?
Do you know that?
• This might be the last chance you have to hear the word of God
• This might be the last chance to come back to the throne of mercy.
• This might be the last chance you have to come back home.
• This might be the last chance to reminisce over your life
• This might be the last chance you have to enter the ark of Noah/Salvation.
• This might be the last chance you have to call upon Jesus because the bible stated in Romans 10 vs 13 “ only those who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
• This might be the last chance for you to hear the teaching about salvation.
Take a pause from your busy schedule to reminisce about your life.
You have been hearing sermons and different teaching about repentance and the coming of Jesus Christ but you never care so much, create some time to examine your life as Christian. The Psalmist always uses the word SELAH after reading some verses, and Selah means PAUSE. Take the pause now and answer the following question.
• How have you been living your life?
• Are you living in accordance to the will of God?
• Are you living as if you might not see tomorrow?
• Are you living as true Christians?
• Is your life worth emulating as a child of God?
• Is your life glorifying the Lord God?
• If you die today or the trumpet should sound, where will you be?
• Are you going to end up in the bosom of father Abraham like Lazarus or hell like the rich man? ( Luke 16: 19-31
• Are you prepared for his coming?
If your answers are no, take this opportunity or this hour to decide to come back to God. Don’t let this hour pass you bye.
The thief on the Cross
The criminal on the cross realized this was his last chance, he reaches out in hope and desperation and says “ Jesus, Remember me when you come into your
kingdom” Jesus answered him, “ I tell you truly today, you will be with me in Paradise” Luke 23:43.
I believe we all know the story of the criminal on the right and left side of the Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross.
They both have the last chance or opportunity to be saved but one was adamant onto death to refuse to see the light while the other open his heart to salvation and he beckon onto the Lord to give him the last chance to be saved and indeed he was saved.
Brethren, Have you refuse to see the light of salvation open before you, or are you still adamant to die? Have you had the opportunity of another chance and you closed your heart to it?
King Solomon had a chance to request one thing from the Lord, and he asked for wisdom and not wealth or the life of his enemies. He asked for Jesus Christ who is wisdom because JESUS CHRIST IS THE WISDOM THE WORLD NEEDS”.
1 Corinthians 2:7 NIV “we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.”
1 Corinthians 1:24 “Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God”
1 Corinthians 1:30-31 “And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that as it is written, ‘let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord”.
As King Solomon use the last chance he had to get an everlasting gift- wisdom, I urge you to open your heart to the Lord God so as not to miss this great opportunity to come back home.
What are you going to do with this last chance you have now?
Are you going to waste it or make good use of it as Solomon did?
I will advise you, brethren, to make good use of the last chance to receive Christ as your Lord and personal savior.
Tomorrow might be too late for you to repent or to come back, you have to heed to call of whom is calling be saved.
I say give your life to Jesus, hand it over to him.
Do you know sin is so sweet and comfortable while being righteous is bitter and hard? The bible says in Matthew 7 vs 13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
A true-life story of a beautiful lady and a young pastor.
The Incident started at the bus garage, a beautiful lady boarded a bus alongside a young pastor. The young pastor started preaching the moment he boarded the bus and he told the young lady, God wants you to repent now.
The lady did not answer the pastor and the bus left the park, the pastor kept on preaching to this lady asking her to give her life to Christ but she did not answer.
As they were going, an accident happened and the only soul lost was the beautiful lady while all the other passengers were injured.
The pastor after seeing the corpse of the beautiful lady was sad and he said “ And I told her to give her life to Christ, I told her to accept Jesus Christ.
Lesson from the story.
The beautiful lady had the last chance to be saved, either she dies and makes heaven or she will be saved from the accident but what happened to her was that she lost her soul and heaven.
The last chance opportunity to be saved was lost to her, there was no chance for her to come back and to accept Christ.
Are you going to miss your last chance opportunity too?
I speak to you all hearers of my word today, where are you standing, Have you also ignored the last chance to be saved.
I urge you to heed to the call of salvation and to enter into the PEACE that the world cannot give, don’t forget a day will come that you will sleep and will not be able to wake up again, please start preparing now.
Romans 13: 11 “ And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep, for now, is our salvation nearer than when we believed”.
If you miss the last chance to be saved, then it might lead to eternal death. Hebrew 9: 27 “And it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this is the Judgment”.
Don’t let this time pass you by, Give your life to Christ. Don’t be carried away in the busy life or the enjoyment of the world, Accept him now.
Examples of some people who experience the last chance opportunity
1. The criminal on the cross
2. Samson – Judges 16
3. Jonah- Jonah 2 and 3
4. Peter-Luke 22 vs 31-34
5. Mary Magdalene
What to do in order not to miss the Last Chance Opportunity.
Hebrew 5 vs 12-14
12 Though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
According to the bible verse started above, you as a Christian that is supposed to be a teacher you are still at the level of baby’s. When you are supposed to be eating solid food, you are still drinking milk like infants.
You have to leave the level of the infant and grow in the Lord, you are supposed to be winning souls for Christ. You have to let go of anything you know will hinder your salvation.
You need to be acquainted with the teaching of the holy spirit on righteousness and how to distinguish good from evil.
Say this to yourself- I need to grow up in the Lord, enough of been a baby Christian.
• You need to constantly read the word of God
• You need to be ready and available for God use
• You need to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal savior
• You need to put God first
• You need to desist from anything that reduces the love of God in your Life
• You need to invite the Holy Spirit into your Life
• You need to fear God above all things
• You need to pray every day and every time
• You need to love God and despise the world.
• You need to appreciate every minute you have and give it to God
• You need to engage in God’s business
• You need to always yield to the calling of God
Remember this, our God is a God of all grace, you are enjoying the grace now because you are alive. The moment a man dies, grace ends.
Michah 7 vs 18 “Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of your possession? He does not retain his anger forever, because He delights in showing Mercy.”
God is talking to you today, come back home, repent now, no matter how terrible your sin is, God can forgive because His anger does not last long.
Don’t take the grace of God for granted, make use of this opportunity to repent and be willing to serve God.
• Are you a drunkard? Stop drinking
• Are you adulterous? Stop it now
• Are you a fornicator? Stop now
• You know what you are doing, stop it now
Don’t forget these children rhymes
Tick, says the clock, tick, tick,
What you have to do, do quick,
Don’t delay your salvation as today might be the last chance you have to be saved.
Say after me:
O Lord, have mercy upon me, miserable offender. Spare me, O God, as I confess my faults. Restore those who are penitent; according to your promises declared unto men in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Grant that I may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life; to the glory of your name, Amen.
